Skiing in Fernie, BC

Fernie is a mountain city located at East Kootenay Regional District, in Southeastern British Columbia. It is popular as a ski vacation location in North America. Some of the deepest champagne powders in the world are found in Fernie. The destination offers something for skiing enthusiasts at every level. There is also a lot to do and see even for non-skiers.

Fernie is a sparsely populated destination with a population of about 5,000 people. Although it is hidden between the Canadian Rookies and Purcell Mountain, its popularity as a ski destination is growing. 

It receives tourists and skiing enthusiasts from the U.S and other parts of Canada. It is easily accessible as it is only an hour’s drive away from the Canada Rockies International Airport. It can also be accessed through the Calgary Airport or the Whitefish Train Station.

Ski Resorts in Fernie: Fernie Alpine Resort

The Fernie Alpine Ski Resort is the main skiing and snowboarding resort in Fernie. It is located about 3 miles away from Fernie City. Its terrain extends over 1013 hectares of land with a 1068 meters vertical rise. The base elevation is at 1068 meters while the summit elevation is at 2149 meters. 

The mountain experiences an average of 30 feet of snow every winter season. The skiing season at the resort opens in the first week of December and closes in mid-April. The first week of April is the snowiest.

The ski terrain is most challenging but there are a few areas suitable for intermediate or beginner skiers. There is a dedicated beginner area, wide flowy blue runs for intermediate skiers, and challenging black and double black runs for skiing experts. The resort has 5 expansive bowls, groomed runs, 142 runs, tree skiing, and 10 lifts.  

When visiting the Fernie Alpine Resort, it is recommended to start with a complementary location tour. It helps you familiarize yourself with the complex mountain terrain. The resort also offers a beginner skiercross course at the lower mountain.

When vacationing at the Fernie, you can stay at the Fernie Resort – it has 55 accommodation units. However, there are off-site accommodation options, e.g., mountain lodging at neighboring hotels, private homes, or condominiums. There are scheduled shuttles that operate between Fernie town and the ski resort daily during the winter season.

Other Activities

Within the Fernie Alpine Resort, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Rock Mountains via the lifts. The resort is open to the public during summers for activities such as guided hiking, mountain biking, scenic chairlift rides, aerial pack activities, and tennis.

Outside of Fernie Alpine Resorts, there is a small-town area where you can hang out at the coffee shops, coffee shops, restaurants, steakhouses or experience the nightlife. 


Fernie offers endless adventure. It is most ideal as a ski vacation destination at the Fernie Ski Alpine Resort.
