Our favourite Hobby farms in BC

Hobby farms can be great places to visit to get a taste of farm life, especially in the summer and fall seasons. Since they often only open their doors to visitors seasonally, hobby farmers are typically not in it for the money, but simply for the enjoyment of running a small farm and sharing it with others. They therefore may not have a lot of animals and crops like larger working farms, but they do tend to feature some livestock and may even have freshly grown food for sale. Some hobby farms go even further and offer even more farm-related recreational activities, such as guided tours, tractor rides, and petting zoos.

Thinking of visiting a hobby farm on your next day trip? Here’s a list of some of our favourite hobby farms in British Columbia.

Hamilton Hobby Farm

Location: Coombs, BC

Hamilton Hobby Farm offers a few different recreational activities for visitors. Consider taking the family on one of the hayrides through their property and observe the horses frolicking in the fields. Or, if you want to get more up close and personal with the farm animals, you can check out their petting zoo. They have pigs, ducks, emus, and rabbits that you can interact with, and you can even feed the chickens.

They also have a variety of food for sale, such as seasonal fruits and vegetables, homemade jam, and grain-fed poultry. If it’s turkey in particular that you’re after, make sure get your order in before Thanksgiving and Christmas!

Galey Farms

Location: Victoria, BC

Galey Farms has all sorts of things going on in the fall! They feature a corn maze, hayrides, and train rides, as well as a kid-friendly ghost town and haunted house just in time for Halloween. Their Carnevil haunted house is particularly impressive, as they’ve devoted nearly 6000 square feet to try and scare their adult visitors! For kids (and easily spooked adults!), there’s the Cornfield of Horror, which features animated recreations of Halloween favourites like The Addams Graveyard and The Haunted Mansion.

While their focus is more on recreational activities, they do have a pumpkin patch where you can find the perfect pumpkin for Halloween. This can also be a great photo op, so be sure to remember your camera!

Kangaroo Creek Farm

Location: Kelowna, BC

If you’re looking for more of a unique kind of hobby farm, check out Kangaroo Creek Farm. They breed and raise more, let’s say, nontraditional types of animals – more specifically, kangaroos and wallabies. Now, rest assured these animals are strictly being raised as hobby farm pets and not for their meat and hides, so you don’t need to worry about anyone offering you any kangaroo meat while you’re there!

As long as you’re with a guide on your visit, you may be able to pet or snap a few photos with the wallabies and kangaroos, as well as some of the other animals there. Kangaroo Creek Farm also features sugar gliders, emus, pot-bellied pigs, peacocks, capybaras, and even more on their property.
