AREA DATA

The Cariboo is cattle country however, forestry is currently the dominant economic force in Quesnel with two pulp mills, a plywood plant, a pellet plant and saw mills. The public sector is also an important employer. Quesnel is home to many small businesses servicing farms and ranches and the ever growing tourist industry.

Quesnel is the commercial centre of the North Cariboo and has a population of approximately 27,000 people. The city is well served by rail, road and air connections.

Hixon

Hixon is an unincorporated community at the northern edge of the Cariboo Region. It is located on the east bank of the Fraser River and is about midway along BC Highway 97 between the cities of Prince George and Quesnel. It was named for Hixon Creek which in turn, is names after a 19th century prospector by the name of Joseph Foster Hixon.
